Healing Protocols

Healing light,
as protocol.

The complete reference for using red and near-infrared light to support your body — grounded in research, written for adults who want to actually understand what they’re doing.

04 / Frequency Pulsed photobiomodulation

Continuous isn’t the only way.

AuroraBox pulses all five clinical wavelengths at selectable frequencies. Tap below to see (and feel) what each mode is for. Most retail “40 Hz lamps” strobe visible light only — ours pulses the full therapeutic spectrum.

CONTINUOUS
STANDARD MODE
Continuous wave.
The default on most panels. Light streams at full power the entire session. Well-studied, broadly effective, what the bulk of the PBM research uses.
4,000+ studies validate continuous-wave PBM for skin, muscle, and joint applications. This is the proven baseline.
05 / Build Your weekly protocol

Build the week that works for you.

Pick a protocol, tap the time slots you’ll actually show up for, and see your weekly minutes add up. Most Tribe members land on 4–6 sessions a week — daily consistency beats intensity every time.

Why it works
Cytochrome c oxidase absorbs 630–850 nm light and accelerates ATP production. Caffeine masks low energy; this addresses the upstream cause. Morning sessions align with natural cortisol rhythm.
How to run it
  1. Position panel 6–8 in from bare chest/torso, sitting or standing.
  2. Set to all wavelengths, continuous mode.
  3. Run 10 minutes. Eyes closed or goggles on if facing panel.
  4. Best paired with hydration and light movement within 30 min.
Hamblin 2017: PBM increases mitochondrial ATP output within minutes of first exposure; systemic adaptation builds over 2–4 weeks.

Why it works
Red light doesn’t suppress melatonin the way blue light does. A 10-minute session 1–2 hours before bed supports natural wind-down without the alertness signal of screens or overhead lighting.
How to run it
  1. Use 60–90 minutes before intended sleep time.
  2. Set to red-only (630/660 nm), 8–12 inch distance.
  3. Run 10 minutes on chest, face, or abdomen.
  4. Dim other lights afterward. Avoid screens when possible.
Zhao 2012: Red light therapy before sleep associated with improved sleep quality and increased nocturnal melatonin in a 14-day trial.

Why it works
Red (630/660 nm) activates fibroblasts at the skin surface. Near-infrared (810/830/850 nm) rebuilds the deeper collagen matrix. Patience is the only side effect — the dermis turns over slowly, and 8–12 weeks is the realistic window.
How to run it
  1. Clean skin, no SPF, no serums — just bare skin.
  2. Position 6–8 in from face or target area.
  3. Run 10 min, goggles on when facing panel.
  4. Apply moisturizer or hyaluronic serum after.
Wunsch & Matuschka (2014): 136-volunteer trial showed significant intradermal collagen density increases and measurable wrinkle reduction over 30 sessions.

Why it works
Red light calms inflammation at the dermal level without the drying effect of benzoyl peroxide or the sensitivity of retinoids. Especially useful for rosacea flare reduction and post-acne redness.
How to run it
  1. Cleanse thoroughly. No actives immediately before.
  2. Red wavelengths only (630/660 nm), 6 in from face.
  3. 10 min daily for 6–8 weeks to see the shift.
  4. Compatible with most topicals — apply after session.
Ablon 2018: Red light showed measurable reductions in acne lesion count and inflammatory markers in an 8-week clinical trial.

Why it works
Near-infrared (810–850 nm) penetrates to joint capsules where ibuprofen can’t reach. Clinical evidence for knee osteoarthritis is particularly strong. Close distance, longer session, treat each joint individually.
How to run it
  1. NIR-only mode or all 5 wavelengths; 4–6 in from joint.
  2. 10–15 min per joint — front, back, both sides.
  3. Daily for 8–12 weeks to hit the primary outcome window.
  4. Combine with gentle mobility work after session.
Fan 2024 meta-analysis: 37 RCTs on knee osteoarthritis showed significant pain reduction and improved function vs placebo at the 8–12 week mark.

Why it works
NIR reaches deep muscle and fascia where chronic tension sits. Addresses the underlying inflammation rather than just the pain signal. Works best when paired with mobility work, not as a passive substitute.
How to run it
  1. Lie or sit so the target area is square to the panel.
  2. NIR mode, 4–6 in from skin, 12–15 min.
  3. Focus on the specific muscle, not just the general area.
  4. Follow with 5–10 min of gentle range-of-motion work.
Chow 2009, Lancet: Low-level laser therapy showed meaningful analgesia for chronic neck and shoulder pain in pooled RCT data.

Why it works
PBM within the 2-hour post-exercise window supports repair before DOMS sets in. Leg day, upper day, whichever day — run the panel over the muscles you actually worked. Also effective as pre-workout priming.
How to run it
  1. Within 2 hours of training, ideally within 30 min.
  2. All 5 wavelengths, 4–8 in from worked muscle groups.
  3. 10 min total, moving the panel if covering multiple areas.
  4. Hydrate and eat protein within the same window.
Ferraresi 2016: PBM pre- and post-exercise reduced muscle damage markers (CK, LDH) and improved performance recovery across multiple training studies.

Why it works
MIT’s Tsai Lab showed that 40 Hz stimulation reduced amyloid plaques in mouse models. AuroraBox pulses all 5 clinical wavelengths at 40 Hz — not just visible light like retail “gamma lamps.” This remains emerging research, not established treatment.
How to run it
  1. Seated, facing panel at 12–18 in. Eyes closed or goggles on.
  2. All wavelengths, 40 Hz pulse mode engaged.
  3. 10 min in the evening, paired with quiet/meditative time.
  4. Not a substitute for any prescribed neurological care.
